We scream, we cry, we scratch our husband's hands and curse him; all part of the fun of giving birth. "I could not stand the pain," a woman named Xing Fang told the Global Times. "It was terrible. I felt like I was going to die. It hurt a lot especially when I experienced the contractions."
At a maternity hospital named Antai in Fengtai District, you can have an entirely more comfortable experience. They specialize in water births.
Ivy Makelin, the Chinese-American General Manager of Beijing Key Frame Cultural Development Co., Ltd, delivered her baby in water at Antai last year. "I gave birth to my first child in United Family Hospitals in 2002," she said. "The delivery process was a difficult birth because the baby was posterior. Fortunately, there was a Jacuzzi tub for the labor. I remember as soon as I entered the water I felt so relaxed."
So, with baby number two, she decided to find a way to stay in the water throughout the delivery.
Makelin said that she learned of Antai from a friend with whom she had parenting classes together. After contacting Antai, Makelin decided to try a water birth.
Wishes granted
"It was more like relaxing in a hot spring rather than giving birth," said Makelin. Unlike her previous delivery, the water birth was really comfortable. "I could talk normally and even smile in between contractions even to the very end. What I needed to do was only to take breaths and close my eyes during the contractions."
